And that because of the altitude there is about 30% less oxygen in the air? Normally, height differences are never that much of an issue when you go traveling. You also don&#8217;t normally fly directly from 0 to 2600 meters.    <strong>But if you are traveling to Colombia and your plane lands in Bogot\u00e1, you do have to deal with that difference in altitude. But what does that actually mean?  <strong>A thin air has a lower air pressure with about 30% less oxygen (at 2600 meters altitude). <\/strong>People from lower elevations do not have enough red blood cells to control for this level of oxygen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Upon arrival in Bogot\u00e1, you will notice this particularly when you are going to exercise, such as taking a long walk, climbing a mountain or climbing stairs.<\/strong> After a period of acclimatization, the body has produced enough extra red blood cells and you don&#8217;t suffer from anything anymore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">By the way, you can go even higher in Colombia, for example in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/an-unforgettable-experience-the-trek-to-glacier-santa-isabel-in-parque-los-nevados-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Los Nevados<\/strong><\/a>. In that case, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altitude_sickness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>altitude sickness<\/strong><\/a> is a real risk and it is wise to prepare well for a climb. <\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: left;\">Preventing altitude sickness<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Although you are unlikely to get altitude sickness in Colombia, unless you go hiking in the highest mountain ranges of the Andes, you can certainly suffer from altitude.<\/strong> Some travelers notice nothing in Bogot\u00e1; others have headaches, insomnia and feel tired for days. This is how you deal with it: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Acclimatization.<\/strong> Take it easy the first few days in capital Bogot\u00e1. For example, don&#8217;t go climbing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-bogota-admire-the-spectacular-view-from-monserrate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Monserrate<\/strong><\/a> by foot, but take the little train or cable car. <\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Drink enough.<\/strong> Drink plenty of water, tea, coffee or even soup. This helps against dehydration and headaches. <\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Take it easy.<\/strong> Some travelers do not notice anything, but for those who do suffer from the altitude, it is recommended to start calm. Don&#8217;t immediately fill up your entire day and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-bogota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wpil=\"url\" data-wpil-url-old=\"aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmVzYWJpbmUuY29tL2NhdGVnb3J5L3dhdC10ZS1kb2VuLWluLWJvZ290YS8=\"><strong>discover Bogot\u00e1<\/strong><\/a> at a leisurely pace. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><strong>2. Smog in Colombia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Because of that 30% less oxygen, gasoline does not burn completely, what you notice by the distinctive gasoline smell in town.<\/strong> The combination of less oxygen and the amount of exhaust fumes in traffic unfortunately make air pollution an even bigger problem in Bogot\u00e1 and other high-altitude cities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I myself was quite unaffected by air pollution the first year I lived in Bogot\u00e1. Except that it&#8217;s annoying. But after that, it started to bother me more and more. A weird taste in my mouth, my skin and hair always oily and a constant feeling of not being able to breathe freely.   <\/p>\n<p>After so many years I&#8217;ve gotten used to it and I also have the impression that it has become slightly cleaner. But I still notice the difference immediately when I am out in nature. <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><strong>3. High sun power<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Bogot\u00e1 is situated at high altitude and almost on the equator. This affects the sun power. <\/strong> While the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ultraviolet_index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>sun strength<\/strong><\/a> in the Dutch summer does not exceed 8 (high), the sun strength in Bogot\u00e1 is around 15 (very strong) every day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This not only results in very rapid skin burning, but also a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skin_cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>higher risk of skin cancer<\/strong><\/a>. Therefore, my day cream is not a day cream, but sunscreen with factor 50. I apply this at least 3 to 4 times a day on my face and hands, the rest is covered by clothing.  <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><strong>4. Climate Colombia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The fact that Bogot\u00e1 is the capital of a tropical country does not automatically mean that it is also 30 degrees there.<\/strong> That is due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/nature-in-colombia-a-paradise-on-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>many ecosystems<\/strong><\/a> that the country possesses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Due to the high altitude, the average temperature in Bogot\u00e1 stays at around 18 degrees during the day and is around 7 degrees at night. <strong>Because of its location on the equator, Colombia does not have spring, summer, autumn and winter, but the weather is the same all year round.<\/strong> There are only two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/travel-in-rainy-season-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>rainy seasons<\/strong><\/a> to be identified, in April and October. The location also means that the sun rises at 6 AM and sets at 6 PM all year round. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/bogotas-bizarre-climate-what-clothes-to-wear-and-what-to-expect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Read more here about the bizarre climate in Bogot\u00e1 and what clothes to wear.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><strong>5. High in the mountains, the boiling point is lower<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Something you might not immediately think of if you plan to cook in Bogot\u00e1 (or anywhere else high in the mountains) is the cooking time. <strong>Due to the lower air pressure, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boiling_point\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boiling point of water<\/a> is also lower and water already boils at around 90 degrees. <\/strong>The boiling water is therefore less hot, so that what you want to cook is heated less.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Therefore, a longer cooking time is needed to achieve the same result as in the Netherlands. For example, I always boil eggs for 15 minutes and then I have an egg that is just right for the salad. The same applies to vegetables and potatoes.   <strong>So a quick boil doesn&#8217;t work here.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><strong>6. Mosquito bites and tropical diseases Colombia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Due to the high altitude, there are few mosquitoes in Bogot\u00e1 and in other high-altitude destinations.<\/strong> Mosquito-borne diseases that do occur in lower parts of the country, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malaria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Malaria<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yellow_fever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>yellow fever<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chikungunya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chikungunya<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zika_fever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zika<\/strong><\/a>, are not found in Bogot\u00e1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minsalud.gov.co\/salud\/publica\/PET\/Paginas\/malaria.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Here<\/strong><\/a> you can see where Malaria is most common in Colombia. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dengue_fever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dengue<\/strong><\/a> can occur, but very rarely in this area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>So smearing with anti-mosquito cream is not necessary in Bogota, but it is advisable if you go to lower elevations (below 2200 meters).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you don&#8217;t want to risk mosquito-borne diseases at all, for whatever reason, for example <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/the-12-most-frequently-asked-questions-about-living-and-traveling-in-colombia-that-i-get-in-my-mailbox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>if you are pregnant and want to travel through Colombia<\/strong><\/a>, then you might consider one of these two travel routes in Colombia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/travel-routes-colombia-off-the-beaten-path-1-from-bogota-to-honda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>From Bogot\u00e1 to Honda<\/strong><\/a> (skipping the part after San Francisco to stay above 2200 meters)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/itinerary-colombia-off-the-beaten-path-villa-de-leyva-to-barichara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>From Villa de Leyva to in the mountains.<\/strong> For example, from the city center you can take walks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-bogota-admire-the-spectacular-view-from-monserrate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Monserrate<\/strong><\/a> or to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/quebrada-la-vieja-bogota-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Quebrada de la Vieja<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can also take the cable car to the unique neighborhood of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/with-the-cable-car-to-el-paraiso-bogota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>El Paraiso<\/strong><\/a>, full of street art and beautiful views.<\/p>\n<p>And you will find many cool day trips in the mountains.
