This makes the village one of the oldest colonial towns in Colombia. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Due to its location, Mompox became an important river port.<\/strong> Goods, gold, cattle, and people travelled along the Magdalena River between Cartagena and the interior of the country. During colonial times, the city grew into a prosperous place, with churches, monasteries, trading buildings, and stately homes. Today, you can still see this history reflected in the village&#8217;s interesting architecture. <\/p>\n<p><strong>In the 19th century, that began to change, and Mompox slowly lost its economic significance.<\/strong> The Magdalena River gradually changed its course, and the river arm at Mompox became less navigable. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmf.org\/monuments\/historic-center-santa-cruz-de-mompox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>World Monuments Fund<\/strong><\/a>, Mompox&#8217;s old riverfront position became stranded in the mid-19th century, causing the city to lose its function as a useful port. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Mompox played a role in Colombian independence. <strong>On August 6, 1810, Mompox declared its independence from Spain under the slogan &#8216;Ser libres o morir&#8217;: to be free or die.<\/strong> This made Mompox one of the first towns to clearly turn against the Spanish crown. <strong>Later, Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar found a lot of support from the population right here in Mompox.<\/strong> Hundreds of residents joined his army and helped him during a crucial phase of his struggle. At the same time, you often see the spelling Momp\u00f3s in Colombia, mainly used by locals. <\/p>\n<p>The origin of the name goes back to an indigenous leader, often mentioned as Mompoj or Mampo, who lived in this area before the Spaniards arrived. For many travelers, it&#8217;s a significant detour that takes a lot of time. <strong>The most logical route to Mompox is from Cartagena.<\/strong> A ride by bus or private driver of about <strong>6 hours<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Buses to Mompox from Cartagena depart early in the morning and can be booked <a href=\"https:\/\/busbud.tpx.gr\/AQREALXm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> or directly at <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/Qdbsmg1rTVLFbFDE7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the bus station in Cartagena<\/a>.<\/strong> If you don&#8217;t feel like heading to the bus station from your hotel in downtown Cartagena at that hour, stay at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/co\/san-sebastian-real.en.html?aid=1132085&#038;no_rooms=1&#038;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Hotel San Sebastian Real<\/strong><\/a> within walking distance of the bus station. The bed is nice, the staff is fantastic, but the location is terrible. For one night, however, it&#8217;s perfectly fine.  <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Besides the trip from Cartagena, there are more options to get to Mompox:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>From <strong>Santa Marta<\/strong> (over 10 hours) or <strong>Barranquilla<\/strong> (over 7 hours). <a href=\"https:\/\/busbud.tpx.gr\/AQREALXm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>You can buy bus tickets on Busbud.<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>By <strong>plane<\/strong> and then another 3 hours by bus or taxi. You fly with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.satena.com\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Satena<\/strong><\/a> directly from Medell\u00edn, or from another city with a layover in Medell\u00edn. You arrive at <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/GKxjFmJKESzBAReA8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Aeropuerto San Bernardo<\/strong><\/a>. Flights don&#8217;t go every day, so some planning is required here.   <\/li>\n<li>From <strong>Bucaramanga<\/strong>. From Bucaramanga, you travel to Mompox in about 8 hours.  <a href=\"https:\/\/busbud.tpx.gr\/AQREALXm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Buy your bus ticket here.<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Go to Mompox with a private driver<\/h3>\n<p>You can also go to Mompox with a driver, either alone or with several people. Central in Mompox. It&#8217;s a <strong>cozy hotel<\/strong> with only a few rooms and a small pool. Additionally, there&#8217;s a living room where you can sit, and the hotel is full of plants. In the morning, a <strong>delicious breakfast<\/strong> is served. I slept well here, under the air conditioning.     <\/p>\n<p>The hotel is right in the historic center and is housed in a historic building. A shame, because why make that whole trip for a flying visit? <strong>I stayed 4 nights in Mompox myself<\/strong> and found it very pleasant. No, the village isn&#8217;t big, and no, there isn&#8217;t a huge amount to do, but believe me: you want to have the time to experience Mompox. To soak up the atmosphere and simply enjoy a village you won&#8217;t likely visit again soon.   <\/p>\n<p><strong>Think of it as a colonial and cozy resting point during your trip.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2 nights you can see the highlights, but you&#8217;ll also miss a lot. <strong>If you&#8217;re really short on time, stay at least 2 nights. Iglesia de Santa B\u00e1rbara<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Iglesia de Santa B\u00e1rbara is probably the most famous church in Mompox and one of the most photographed spots in the city.<\/strong> The church was built in colonial times and stands out mainly for its unusual tower with yellow and white details, reflecting influences of Baroque and Spanish-Moorish architecture. The river promenade<\/h3>\n<p>Mompox is located on a branch of the Magdalena River and <strong>the promenade along the water is definitely the most beautiful spot in town<\/strong>. It&#8217;s beautiful here in the morning, during lunch, and in the evening at sunset. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Wander along the promenade, from one side of Mompox to the other and back again.<\/strong> Visit picturesque cafes, stare at the nature on the other side of the river, read a book somewhere by the water&#8217;s edge, and have dinner in one of the good restaurants along the water.<\/p>\n<p>The route is packed with history, <strong>as if colonial times are coming back to life<\/strong>. I couldn&#8217;t get enough of it\u2014so much romance, coziness, and history in this one part of Mompox. Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepci\u00f3n<\/h3>\n<p>The Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepci\u00f3n is <strong>one of the most important churches in the historic center of Mompox<\/strong>. Due to its size, location, and classic appearance, this church clearly shows how important religion was in the colonial life of the city. Around the square, you&#8217;ll find colonial buildings and spots that recall Mompox&#8217;s role in Colombia&#8217;s independence. The red San Francisco church<\/h3>\n<p>The Iglesia de San Francisco <strong>immediately stands out with its deep red facade with white colonial details and large green wooden doors<\/strong>. Claustro de San Carlos<\/h3>\n<p>The Convent Palacio de San Carlos is <strong>one of the most interesting historical buildings in Mompox<\/strong>. Originally, it was connected to the Jesuits, who taught here until they were expelled from Spanish territories in the 18th century. <\/p>\n<p>The guide on the walking tour took me there, very interesting. <strong>The building is beautiful<\/strong>, with a courtyard where you can observe daily life. You&#8217;ll also find beautiful art to walk past. Cementerio Municipal<\/h3>\n<p>The Mompox cemetery is <strong>an exceptionally photogenic place<\/strong>, with white graves, old monuments, and a serene atmosphere. And: <strong>full of cats<\/strong>. Do a filigree workshop: Mompox&#8217;s famous craft<\/h3>\n<p><strong>One of the most beautiful traditions of Mompox is filigree, or fine gold and silver smithing.<\/strong> This involves twisting, shaping, and bringing together thin threads of precious metal into the most beautiful patterns. In the past, gold was used a lot, but nowadays silver is more common, partly because it&#8217;s more accessible and cheaper. <\/p>\n<p>It is a lot of fun to do a <strong>filigree workshop<\/strong> and make your own souvenir from the special town of Mompox. I did the workshop at <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/J5K3bvK8BX5KQpjc6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wamaris<\/strong><\/a>. It was great to see how they make this and the patience required for it.   A special kind of craftsmanship that I had never seen before. <strong>An absolute must-do when you&#8217;re in Mompox!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Mompox, you&#8217;ll find workshops and shops everywhere where you can view or buy filigree. here. After the white churches and colonial streets, you suddenly enter a landscape with nothing but <strong>water, birds, reptiles, canoes, and small remote fishing villages<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Many <strong>special animals<\/strong> live in the Ci\u00e9naga de Piji\u00f1o. Especially birds and reptiles. Think of white herons, brown herons, and <strong>kingfishers<\/strong>. I saw a lot of <strong>eagles<\/strong> myself, very beautiful. And on the way back, we saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brilkaaiman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>spectacled caiman<\/strong><\/a>, very special. Additionally, there are more animals you might encounter, such as iguanas and monkeys.     <\/p>\n<p>Besides the animals you see there, you get to know the <strong>local fishing community<\/strong>. Along the way, you come across small villages where people get around by canoe and live off fishing.  <strong>A beautiful glimpse into Colombian life far away from mass tourism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Where to book a tour to Ci\u00e9naga de Piji\u00f1o?<\/h4>\n<p>I did the boat trip through Ci\u00e9naga de Piji\u00f1o with <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/YdpwNXXa4QT8X8ceA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chipitours<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>You can also arrange it with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/eltallerpopular\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Taller Popular<\/a>, where Frenchman Flavien, who knows everything about the region, takes you into the wilderness.<\/strong> I chose a private boat trip, where you have the whole boat to yourself and can walk from front to back to see everything clearly. <\/p>\n<p><strong>The boat departs either in the early morning or in the late afternoon.<\/strong> Apparently, you have a better chance of seeing animals in the morning, but I <strong>chose the afternoon<\/strong> anyway. And I was very happy with that choice.  I saw so many beautiful birds, a spectacled caiman, and I truly enjoyed the impressive sunset. <strong>From the water, the sunset over Mompox is truly spectacularly Take a literary detour to the village of Aracataca<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Are you interested in literature and history?<\/strong> Then it&#8217;s worth combining Mompox with Aracataca, <strong>the birthplace of Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez<\/strong>. The Colombian writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. This isn&#8217;t right next to Mompox, but it helps you get to know the interior of northern Colombia even better.  <\/p>\n<h4>One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/JSCRde1Wxoz4PuPn9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Aracataca<\/strong><\/a> is special because it is seen as <strong>one of the main inspirations for Macondo, the fictional village where the book One Hundred Years of Solitude is set<\/strong>. Aracataca is not a perfectly restored colonial city like Mompox, but a typical tropical Caribbean-Colombian village with dusty old houses, railway lines, squares, and banana plantations in the area.  <strong>You thus experience the atmosphere from which one of the most famous literary worlds of Latin America emerged.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Sights in Aracataca<\/h4>\n<p><strong>The main attraction is the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/aMQTgRStkFTqXRmi7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casa Museo Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez<\/a>.<\/strong> This museum stands on the site of his grandparents&#8217; house, where Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez spent part of his youth. Although the current house is <strong>a reconstruction<\/strong>, you still experience the atmosphere of his youth and family history. For readers of his books, this is a special place because many memories, characters, and themes from his work go back to his early years in Aracataca.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>In the village, you&#8217;ll also find various references to Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez and Macondo.<\/strong> Think of murals, monuments, street names, and places connected to his life or the world of his novels. Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/Hnot5fNAeXYM3rJf8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the old train station<\/strong><\/a> is interesting because the train and the <strong>banana industry<\/strong> played an important role in the history of this region and in the literary universe of Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez. <\/p>\n<p>Aracataca is especially worth it if you&#8217;re interested in Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez, literature, Macondo, Colombian history, or the Caribbean interior. <strong>It&#8217;s not a destination where you need to stay for days, but as a stopover, it will certainly be worth it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>Eating and drinking in Mompox<\/h2>\n<hr>\n<p>Although Mompox is only a small village, you&#8217;ll find surprisingly much good food and drink. Not only great restaurants but also typical Colombian Caribbean cuisine. <\/p>\n<h3>Restaurants in Mompox<\/h3>\n<p><strong>For such a small hidden town, I was surprised by the good and cozy restaurants there.<\/strong> I really enjoyed eating out in Mompox. There are not just local cuisines, but all sorts of things. And there is plenty to find for vegetarians (like me) as well. <\/p>\n<h4>1. Ra\u00edces &#038; Aromas de la Villa<\/h4>\n<p>This restaurant was my favorite in Mompox. You can have a nice meal there, and they have a lovely terrace by the water where you can sit comfortably. Fish is often served with rice, salad, patacones, or yuca. As a vegetarian, I didn&#8217;t eat this, but if you like fish, definitely ask for it here. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Queso de capa.<\/strong> In Mompox and the surrounding area, you&#8217;ll encounter queso de capa, a layered cheese that&#8217;s for sale everywhere. It&#8217;s a fun local flavor to try, and if you have time, you can also visit a cheese factory. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Fruit juices.<\/strong> You can find fruit juice everywhere in Colombia, but in Mompox you can try fresh fruit juices that you won\u2019t come across in many other places. Namely <em>jugo de corozo<\/em>. A fruit that only grows in the Caribbean region of Colombia, so you should definitely try it. I found Mompox <strong>very much worth it<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a picturesque, unique village hidden in the Colombian interior, with a very charming historic center and beautiful surroundings.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>I went to Mompox from my home in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-bogota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bogot\u00e1<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.besabine.com\/en\/cartagena-colombia-travel-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cartagena<\/a>, a trip specifically to visit the town.<\/strong> If you visit Mompox during your trip through Colombia, you usually have to take a detour for it. Realize that Mompox, as you&#8217;ve read above, is not a village with spectacular sights, but rather a place of peace and authenticity. One you&#8217;ll quickly fall in love with. Are you looking for that, and would you like to see more of Colombia than the standard destinations?
